It is given to fewer still to complete it. What you have done represents an achievement which, so far as His Grace is aware, is quite without parallel in modern times." The Pepper Bible a Work of Love - United Methodist Reporter Article Producing Bible by hand is labour of Love, Faith, for a Dallas Man - United Methodist News Service Hand Lettering of Bible Proves Illuminating - Dallas Morning News
For the past 18 years I have been making by hand using pen and ink an illuminated manuscript of the Bible (KJV). I have the blessings of Pope John Paul II and the Archbishop of York. I am a Methodist. I just completed a set of Gospels that contain 565 pages almost all of them are illustrated, 310 of them are illuminated, they have metals applied to them to make them shine and reflect light. The result is a Modern Day Book of Kells. This set of Gospels was on display in March and April of 2005 at teh Biblical Arts Museum in Dallas, Texas USA!
In the Gospel of Luke alone, I have 25 full page illuminations called Carpet pages, and over 650 illustrated verse initials. In John chapters 18 and 19, the Passion of Christ, I have an interlinear Polyglot in English, Latin, and Greek. Each chapter of the Gospels are written in a different form of calligraphy and it is extensively decorated. The result is a book that will stand for centuries as an example of what you can do if you have a little faith. Luke is a Celtic Manuscript where almost every chapter starts with a full page carpet page, just as the Saint Johns bible or the Book of Kells starts their books with a full page carpet page. The script is insular script th same type of script fouodn int eh Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels. Luke 23, the Passion of Christ was the feature of the Bible exhbition at the Biblical Arts Museum in Dallas Texas Last year. The text was written in 7 pages and arranged vertically to form the twin towers of the World Trade Centers with 110 lines of text for the 110 floors, and crosses placed where the airplanes hit the buildings and a large cross at the top where my friends died. The three crosses represent Calvary. In 1987 I started this project, completing the New Testament in 1995. In 1997 I received a bible from the Archbishop of Canterbury to correct my text. When September 11 came along and killed four of my friends, I determined to make a great book, a Gospel Book, full of illuminations and it took 50 months to complete. I am aware of the Saint Johns Bible, the Dallas Morning News interviewed them in 2001 comparing the two Bible projects. They use computers; I did it by hand, by myself and I have more illuminations and decorations in my set of Gospels than they have in their entire Bible. For some strange reason they claim they are the first to do this in 500 years, despite knowing about my work since 2001? You don't need a huge project to do this, all you need is the will to do it, and faith in God! |
